Stay up to date on the Biltmore Lake market
Originally, the Biltmore name was derived from George Washington Vanderbilt II, who used to visit the area of Asheville, North Carolina, in the mid-19th century with his mother, Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt. In 1888, Vanderbilt decided to build a summer estate in the Asheville area near the mountains. He purchased 700 parcels of land, which included 50 farms and five cemeteries. At that point, the land was in very poor condition, so the landowners were more than happy to sell their land to Vanderbilt. In 1897, Vanderbilt founded Biltmore Farms which was one of the most prominent dairy farms in the southeastern part of the United States. Over time, profits began to fall and Vanderbilt sold the dairy business to Pet, Inc. which produced shelf-stable products, primarily powdered milk. Eventually, Vanderbilt transformed the company into a development firm specialized in building commercial real estate, hotels, and residential homes. The company's first hotel was actually a dairy processing plant that was vacated by Pet, Inc. The building was transformed into the modern-day Doubletree Biltmore Hotel. Much of the real estate in and around the Asheville, North Carolina area have some historical connection to the Vanderbilt legacy, which includes much of Biltmore Lake.
